The Colosseum was built in the 70s AD and was the largest amphitheater built during the Roman Empire. Capable of seating 70,000 spectators, the amphitheater was used until 524 when a series of earthquakes severely damaged the structure. Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater, it was used for gladiatorial combat until Christianity slowly ended this form of entertainment.
